EU’s Commitment to Tracking Employee Time
In recent years, there has been a significant shift towards digital employee time tracking in the workplace, driven by both efficiency and regulatory requirements. This trend towards tracking time digitally was notably marked by a 2019 ruling of the European Court that mandated all member states to implement systems for recording employee work time.
The directive, an update to the European Working Time Directive, requires employers to establish an "objective, reliable, and accessible system" for measuring daily working hours. The general idea behind tracking time digitally is clear: compliance with labour law, protection of workers’ rights (by monitoring working hours, breaks and overtime), and a broader commitment to improving transparency and fairness in labour practices across the EU.
Tracking time becomes standard practice
Individual countries within the EU have begun to work on their own laws in response to this directive. Germany and Spain are leading the way, with requirements in various phases of development. Typically, Germany emphasizes the need for precision and reliability to ensure compliance with both national and EU regulations. For Spain, transparency is very important, with employers required to maintain detailed records of working hours that must be accessible to employers, employees, and government inspectors.
The importance of preparing for these changes cannot be overstated. As digital time tracking becomes a standard practice across the EU, it makes sense for any employer to invest in digital technology to remain compliant. But that is not all. Digital time tracking offers significant benefits for any business. It can improve payroll processes, save time on workforce management, and positively impact employee satisfaction and overall productivity.
